Old is Gold!
A week styling some of my oldest pieces & some thoughts on everyday dressing
Another week of everyday outfits, this time rediscovering lost old gems and reinventing them for the me of today! I mean I pretty much do that anyway, because my wardrobe is made up of pieces that I wear year round, despite the season. But this week I made an even more concerted effort to dig out some older pieces for some remixing action in the style stakes!
Re-wearing old pieces can seem almost a novelty nowadays, because we are so conditioned to want new things all the time, especially in the run up to Black Friday and the festive season (but that’s another story!)
Ordinarily, we should be celebrating wearing and re-wearing our clothes for all aspects of our lives. Getting dressed is a huge part of my routine, and no matter what I’m doing or where I’m going, I always plan and wear outfits, as opposed to slinking about in sweatpants or PJs - it just makes me feel more put together and ready for my day!
I also believe in just wearing everything and not ‘saving things for best’ - nobody knows what’s going to happen tomorrow, so we should just get the pleasure from our wardrobes today! If that means dressing down tulle or sequins with trainers for daytime then so be it (actually one of my favourite looks!). I wore a tie last week to a school hockey match and it sparked an interesting conversation with a fellow school dad (of all people!), all about preloved clothes (outfit coming soon!). I also love dressing for each and every small moment in life - whether that’s going to the bank or school pick-up, as well as dressing up for parties or dinners out!
Also, nothing gives me more comfort then to have a play with my clothes (especially when things are topsy-turvy IRL!) And that's what this week was - a big comfort blanket! Let me take you through my outfits for the week…
Monday
Old piece: Checked M&S womenswear blazer
It's one of the few womenswear blazers I have left in my wardrobe! Decided to pull it out to see if I still liked styling and wearing it! Naturally, in true me fashion, I print clashed it with burgundy stripes, added a shot of colour via the preloved mustard pleated skirt and added chunky preloved loafers with sparkly socks, with a burgundy clutch. This was such a feel good, sunny outfit!
Tuesday
Old piece(s): A couple - thrifted Sea NY leopard blouse and Anna Glover x H&M blazer
Went for a full on print clash moment today - with the leopard and dots in similar hues. Picked up on the black tones via this thrifted asymmetric midi skirt, to which I added navy sparkly socks + silver loafers, and a thrifted belt. I know there’s a lot going on, but I felt energised in this get up! Went for more-is-more with a grosgrain ribbon tied to my tote!
Wednesday
Old piece(s): Black Arket culottes that I’ve had for ages but don’t wear too often, red striped COS tee that I’ve had ages and wear A LOT, red tartan thrifted cardigan (have had it a couple years but haven’t reached for it too often)
An easy, breezy, gentle print clash was the order of the day for this outfit, which I paired with my favourite pink chunky loafers and customised tote bag - also added a men’s silk tie to it, tied in a bow of course! Really liked this outfit - a new combo for me! I think the tartan will be out again in the run-up to Christmas!
Thursday
Old pieces: Thrifted St. Michael velvet tux blazer and preloved grey tulle maxi skirt
Injected an element of part fantasy, part goth into this day - due to Halloween and Diwali falling on the same day! As you know, I adore wearing tulle skirts for daytime, and this was just a dream! To toughen things up I added a gathered chains necklace, and to soften things up again I added the pink flower pin to the necklace (just call me the juxtaposition queen!). Silver loafers picked up on the silver tones, and the chain bag harmonised with the necklace. A new combination for me, but one I would easily wear again and again (I even layered a black skirt underneath, both for warmth and volume!) as it works so well for day and night! Can I make every tulle outfit my favourite?!
Friday
Old pieces: Lime green Lacoste polo shirt (which used to be my Dad’s!) and this magenta quilted liner
Went for a double magenta neon moment, with the nostalgic lime adding a contrasting punch! I punctuated the look with silver and studded accessories - studded belt, silver loafers and my beige patent bag. I really loved wearing this neon-y colour palette - it certainly is punchy! I definitely found it fun and uplifting - it’s yet another new combination for me, and one I’d wear again in a heartbeat!
So that was the week of outfits styling some of my oldest pieces and I hope you enjoyed seeing the looks, and reading about them, as much as I enjoyed styling and wearing them!
What are the oldest pieces in your wardrobe? How would you style them today? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading my stylish friends! Till next time! Meera xxx
